Meaning: The Calamity / The Striking Event
Chapter: 101
Verses: 11
Place of Revelation: Meccan
⚡ Overview
Al-Qāri’ah refers to the catastrophic event of the Day of Judgment — a moment of intense upheaval and accountability when the entire universe is shaken and every soul faces the consequences of its deeds.
📖 Verse-by-Verse Explanation
1–3: The Terrifying Event
“The Striking Calamity—
What is the Striking Calamity?
And what can make you know what the Striking Calamity is?”
🔥 The surah begins with a powerful and dramatic tone, emphasizing the unimaginable nature of this event.
4–5: The Shaking of the Earth
“It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.”
🌪 People will scatter helplessly like fragile moths, while the mighty mountains will crumble into soft fluff — symbolizing the complete upheaval of the world.
6–8: The Scale of Deeds
“Then as for one whose scales [of good deeds] are heavy,
He will be in a pleasant life.
But as for one whose scales are light,
His refuge will be an abyss.”
⚖️ Everyone’s deeds will be weighed precisely — heavy good deeds lead to bliss, while light deeds result in punishment.
9–11: The Abyss of Hell
“And what can make you know what it is?
It is a Fire, intensely hot.”
🔥 The surah concludes with a vivid warning of Hellfire, a severe consequence for those whose deeds fall short.
