Al-'Adiyat (The Courser)

Sūrah Al-‘Ādiyāt (سورة العاديات)

Meaning: The Courser (The Racing Horse)
Chapter: 100
Verses: 11
Place of Revelation: Meccan

🐎 Overview

This surah opens with a striking description of warhorses charging into battle, panting and striking sparks as they race, highlighting human ingratitude and attachment to worldly gains. It serves as a reminder of the Day of Judgment, where all secrets will be revealed and true intentions judged.

📖 Verse-by-Verse Explanation

1–5: The Powerful Image of the Charging Horses

وَٱلْعَادِيَٰتِ ضَبْحًا
فَٱلْمُورِيَٰتِ قَدْحًا
فَٱلْمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبْحًا
فَٱلْۡمُغِيرَٰتِ نَفْحًا
فَٱلْحَٰمِلَٰتِ وِقْرًا

“By the racers, panting,
And the producers of sparks [when] striking,
And the chargers at dawn,
Stirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,
Arriving thereby in the center collectively.”

🐎 This powerful imagery symbolizes urgency, energy, and the relentless pace of life, often compared to human struggles and efforts.

6–8: The Human Heart and Greed

“Indeed, mankind is to his Lord ungrateful,
And indeed, he is to that a witness,
And indeed, he is, in love of wealth, intense.”

💔 Humans often forget their Creator, are ungrateful, and intensely love worldly gain — sometimes to the point of losing perspective.

9–11: The Reality of the Hereafter

“Does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered,
And that which is within the breasts is obtained,
Indeed, their Lord is, of them, Seeing?”

⚖️ On the Day of Judgment, all deeds and hidden thoughts will be laid bare before Allah, who sees everything.
