Sūrah Al-Inshiqāq (سورة الإنشقاق)
Meaning: The Splitting Open
Chapter: 84
Verses: 25
Place of Revelation: Meccan
📜 Name Origin
The name comes from the word "inshaqqa" (ٱنشَقَّتْ) in the first verse, which means “to split open.” The chapter begins with the sky splitting apart — one of the many cosmic signs of the end times, similar to those found in At-Takwīr (81), Al-Infitar (82), and Al-Zalzalah (99).
🌌 Overview and Structure
This chapter is a dramatic reminder that everything — the heavens, the earth, and the soul — is heading toward reckoning.
📖 Verses 1–5: Cosmic Submission
"When the sky is split open,
And has listened to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]..."
-
The heavens obey God by splitting open.
-
The earth too, in verse 3, stretches out, casts out what’s inside, and obeys.
These verses reflect a deep message:
→ Even the mightiest creations submit to God’s command — why not you?
🧍♂️ Verses 6–15: The Journey of the Soul
"O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet Him."
(84:6)
This powerful verse reminds us:
-
Life is a struggle — but it’s not aimless.
-
Everyone is moving toward meeting God, whether they realize it or not.
Then, two outcomes are presented:
🟢 The Righteous
"As for he who is given his record in his right hand,
He will be judged with an easy account
And return to his people in happiness."
(84:7–9)
-
The record of deeds is placed in the right hand (a sign of success).
-
Such a person will be gently judged and filled with joy.
🔴 The Wicked
"But as for he who is given his record behind his back,
He will cry out for destruction
And [enter to] burn in a Blaze."
(84:10–12)
-
The record is given behind his back — some say with the left hand, or thrown at him — a sign of humiliation.
-
He regrets, he wails, but it’s too late.
“Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness.
Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allah].”
(84:13–14)
This is a warning to those who live life carelessly, thinking there is no afterlife.
📢 Verses 16–25: Final Warning & Response
"So I swear by the twilight glow,
And [by] the night and what it envelops,
And [by] the moon when it becomes full..."
(84:16–18)
-
God swears by stunning natural phenomena — twilight, night, the full moon — drawing attention to the certainty of change and the truth of the afterlife.
“You will surely ride stage after stage.” (84:19)
-
Life is a journey of stages — from childhood to adulthood, from life to death, from the grave to resurrection.
-
No stage is the end — until the Final Meeting with God.

🌒 "You are traveling — not just through time, but toward a final encounter with your Creator."
This surah gently shakes the soul awake. It tells us:
-
The earth will give up its secrets.
-
The sky will obey.

You will be handed your record.
