Sūrah Al-Ghāshiyah (سورة الغاشية)
Verses: 26
Place of Revelation: Meccan
🌪️ Name & Theme
The name "Al-Ghāshiyah" comes from the first verse and means:
-
The Overwhelming,
-
The Enveloping Event,
-
Referring to the Day of Judgment, which will overwhelm every soul, either with joy or with dread.
📖 Section-by-Section Explanation
1. The Overwhelming Day (Verses 1–7)
"Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
Some faces that Day will be humbled,
Laboring, exhausted,
Burning in a scorching fire,
Given drink from a boiling spring,
No food for them except from a bitter, thorny plant —
Which neither nourishes nor satisfies hunger."
🔻 This section describes the wicked on the Day of Judgment:
-
Their faces are humiliated, weary, and exhausted — reflecting their wasted efforts in this life, spent on wrong or meaningless pursuits.
-
Their reward is torment:
-
Boiling drink
-
Unpleasant, thorny food (possibly ḍarī‘, a cactus-like desert plant)
-
This powerful imagery highlights the consequences of ignoring divine truth and living solely for the dunya (worldly life).
2. The Reward of the Righteous (Verses 8–16)
"[Other] faces that Day will be joyful,
Pleased with their effort,
In a lofty Garden,
Wherein they will hear no idle speech.
Within it is a flowing spring,
Therein are raised couches,
And cups put in place,
And cushions lined up,
And carpets spread out."
🌸 In contrast, the righteous:
-
Are joyful, satisfied, and at peace.
-
They are rewarded with Jannah (Paradise):
-
No stress or idle talk
-
Comfort: beautiful couches, cushions, cups, carpets
-
Peace and reward for sincere effort in this life
-
This section shows that faith and righteous action do not go unnoticed — every sincere act is rewarded.
3. Signs in Creation (Verses 17–20)
"Do they not look at the camels — how they are created?
And at the sky — how it is raised?
And at the mountains — how they are set up?
And at the earth — how it is spread out?"
🦙☁️⛰️🌍 Allah calls attention to signs in creation:
-
Camels — remarkable creatures perfectly suited to desert life.
-
The sky — vast and without pillars.
-
Mountains — stabilizing forces on the earth.
-
The earth — spread out for living and cultivating.
This is a call to reflect: if creation is so perfect, how can anyone doubt the Creator or deny the Resurrection?
4. The Prophet’s Role (Verses 21–22)
"So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.
You are not over them a controller."
🕊️ The Prophet ﷺ is reminded:
-
His job is to convey the message, not to force people to believe.
-
Everyone has free will — guidance is in Allah’s hands.
5. The Ultimate Return (Verses 23–26)
"But whoever turns away and disbelieves,
Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
Indeed, to Us is their return.
Then upon Us is their reckoning."
☝️ Final warning:
-
Those who turn away will face the Greatest Punishment (al-‘adhāb al-akbar).
-
All return to Allah, and He alone will judge.
