Sūrah Al-Balad (سورة البلد)
Verses: 20
Place of Revelation: Meccan
🏙️ Name & Context
The name Al-Balad means “The City”, and in the first verse, Allah swears by the sacred city of Makkah — the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
📖 Verse-by-Verse Thematic Breakdown
1. Swearing by the Sacred City (Verses 1–3)
لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
“I swear by this city (Makkah),
And you [O Prophet] are free in this city,
And [by] the father and what he begot…”*
-
Allah swears by Makkah, highlighting its spiritual status.
-
The Prophet ﷺ is facing oppression in his own homeland.
-
“The father and what he begot” may refer to Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ismail, or more generally to the chain of human generations.
📍 This opening reminds us:
-
You can be oppressed even in your own land, but God sees everything.
2. The Reality of Human Life (Verse 4)
"We have certainly created man into hardship (كَبَد)."
🛠️ Life is a test. We were not created for ease, but to struggle:
-
Against injustice
-
Against our desires
-
For truth and righteousness
The Arabic word "kabd" literally means pain, strain, or toil — echoing that every soul is born into effort.
3. Human Arrogance & False Security (Verses 5–7)
"Does he think that no one has power over him?
He says, 'I have spent enormous wealth!'
Does he think no one sees him?"
Some people become:
-
Proud of their wealth
-
Convinced they are untouchable
-
Forgetful of the fact that Allah sees everything
💰 Spending doesn’t always equal generosity — it can be done for ego.
4. The Two Paths (Verses 8–10)
"Did We not give him two eyes,
A tongue and two lips,
And shown him the two paths?"
🧠 Allah reminds us:
-
You were given senses, speech, and intellect.
-
You know the difference between right and wrong.
-
Life is about choosing between two paths: good or evil.
5. The Difficult Path (Verses 11–16)
"But he has not broken through the steep path.
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the steep path?
It is the freeing of a slave,
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
An orphan of near relationship
Or a needy person in misery…"
🧗♂️ The “steep path” (العقبة) is moral courage — the hard but right thing:
-
Freeing the oppressed
-
Feeding the hungry
-
Supporting the orphan and the desperate
This is how one climbs spiritually — not by wealth, but by sacrifice and service.
6. The Two Groups (Verses 17–20)
"Then he was of those who believed and advised one another to patience and compassion.
Those are the companions of the right.
But those who disbelieved in Our signs — they are the companions of the left.
Over them is a Fire closed in."
🌿 Those who:
-
Believe
-
Act righteously
-
Support one another in patience and mercy
→ belong to the people of the right (a term for the blessed in the Hereafter).
🔥 But those who:
-
Deny the truth,
-
Reject God’s signs,
→ are people of the left, wrapped in a fire from which there is no escape.
